Music Box

Based on "Epinicion" by John Paulson

Click an image for more information. Created and designed by Julie Guilbeau* based on the musical piece, "Epinicion" by John Paulson. "I wanted to create a piece that brought forward the horror and pain "Epinicion" elicits in me. From my research, I gathered that this song was about the rollercoaster of emotions experienced by a World War II soldier, having just won the war, taking in the wreckage and bodies of his fallen comrades. I wanted there to be a strong theme of death and decay, as well as overwhelming dread. I chose to create my project in such a way where it looks like the earth is rising up and enclosing the viewer, almost like a tunnel. I used large cardboard insects, twigs from trees on campus, and 3D printed skulls to push the theme of death, as well as red poppies, which are often shown as symbols of life from death in World War II media. The centerpiece is a hanging skeleton, immediately catching the viewer's eye and forcing them to take in a very uneasy scene." This piece was created for a Scenic Design course at UL Lafayette. * denotes student artists
